Do you realize that with a special needs child (cognitive) that there are limits to what they can learn?
I know you are upset your child has a disability, mine does too, but we have to realize that teachers/doctors etc… arent God or miracle workers and cant "fix" our kids especially after a certain age. I see so many parents being jerks to the professionals acting like they owe them a "normal" child. We should appreciate they want to work with our children and treat them with respect. They didnt cause our children’s problem.

I think sometimes people with children who have special needs tend to find it easier to take it out on everyone else….its like a defense mode to keep them self’s from truly realizing there child is making them frustrated. if they acknowledged that it was their child they might feel horrible.

Yea, but do you also know that Albert Einstein (The greatest mind of the 20th Century) was also a special needs child BUT look at what he still manged to do at the young age of 26 years old. Not only did he discover the Theory of Special Relativity ( E=MC^2; energy consumed as an object approaches the speed of light) but he also discovered the Theory of Quantum Mechanics ( Molecules, Atoms, Electrons, etc….). Yet, despite his learning disability Albert Einstein’s Theories are still baffling scientist a hundred years later.

I’m not saying that all special needs children will be as successful as Albert Einstein was but with a little love and encouragement these children can accomplish anything they set their minds to. These parents who are ashamed of their children and are embarrassed to be around them because of a disability their children have need a size 14 EEE steel-toed boot up their backsides. No respectable parent should ever be ashamed or feel embarrassment over of their children, regardless.

My take on this problem statement is this: I believe a child with learning problems can learn most things programed for them when the task is broken down into small segments tailored to their learning style, with a great deal of frequency of tasks, intensity, variety and effective teaching strategies.
Now, it is true that good consistent teaching by a knowledgeable caring teacher is a necessary part of the educational team for this child. There is no time to play the blame game. All of that energy needs to be put into working as a united team to help the child make progress. These children can be taught vocational skills, proper social behaviors, and domestic skills. To do this it takes "the whole village to raise these children".
As a retired regular education teacher, special education teacher, special education program director, I think we place too many limits on what these children can do, instead of opening all doors of opportunity to them.
