Sidewalks of New York – DivX Version (Normal Quality), DVD (Good Quality), PDA Version

Sidewalks of New YorkSidewalks of New York (2001)

IMDB rating: 6.50

Plot: Six New Yorkers have an interrelated series of relationships. TV producer Tommy, who’s just broken up with his girlfriend, has a short relationship with commitment-phobe Maria, who he meets in a video store, and also hooks up with married real-estate agent Annie, who he meets while apartment hunting. Annie is open to a relationship because her husband, Griffin, is cheating on her, which she slowly comes to realize through talking to her friend/co-worker who’s gone through the same thing. Griffin, a 39-year-old dentist, is cheating with 19-year-old waitress Ashley, who he picked up in a park; she realizes she can do better when Ben, a hotel doorman and aspiring musician, tries to pick her up, in a belated attempt to recover from his divorce a year ago from schoolteacher Maria (the same Maria from the video store). Most of these relationships seem driven more by a desperate need to be in a relationship than actual love.

What do you think of this poem?
Life was clear as I ran through the green solemn grass,

chasing crickets until I fell into piled autumn leaves,

delightfully tossing them into the air until the soft powdery snow covered my bright red nose.

Now I know the sea calls home his crystal waves to moan

Tragically I had forgotten time’s dishonesty,

Thus I am left here grown, cold and alone.

Memories soon perish away into reminiscence

as my pale face stares out at the busy nighttime streets;

My apartment grows near,

and it’s emptiness is my asylum.

But, for now I remain counting sidewalk squares below poorly lit lampposts which always seem wet,

hopelessly shuffling in my jacket pockets in desperation for a fictional cigarette.

I know I am my own abrader,

this I will not refute.

Too scream into a hallow shell and have its echoes ricochet off your heart is tiresome,

and past recollections only increase its momentum.

The New York streets don’t help my cause,

Such animosity and loathing rattles me with its continuous barrage.

Finally home, tired and sick,

I notice not a tear cascades down my face as I swallow the pills.

Farewell childhood ghosts,

I am your captor no longer, watch me smile until the bottle spills.

it’s almost too descriptive .. take away some of the imagery. it got kind of repetitive. no offense, but revise it a bit. good luck.

To much imagery. It sounds almost robotic to a point, even though i know the emotion is down there. I liked your 4th line, it was vivid.
Decent poem.

I really like this poem. It seems as if you’re capturing the image of death. Very emotional I must add. Everything is great except that there is no rhythm nor rhyme making it Free Verse. This is not a good impression on critics as they consider it more of prose rather than poetry.

Can I also know why did you write this poem? Could you please answer me on my e-mail: irfan_helmy_95@yahoo.com
